The Room Where It Happens

Campaigns are often measured in big numbers — polling percentages, fundraising totals, the number of doors knocked. But for me, the real heartbeat of this run is found in the quiet, one-on-one conversations that happen when the cameras aren't rolling.

Over the last week, I spent a lot of time at Gist Wine Shop downtown. It's a great local spot — but more importantly, it became a classroom for how our city and state actually work.

Two Nights, One Goal

First, I attended Civics Uncorked. The room was standing room only to hear our Sioux Falls state representatives give their report on the latest legislative session. No jargon, no grandstanding — just neighbors asking tough, honest questions about how their government functions and how they can stay involved.

The very next day, we were back in that same room for a campaign fundraiser hosted by some incredible friends. This time, we steered the conversation toward our city.

The change in topic didn't change the energy. People are hungry to understand the "how" of Sioux Falls.

The Consistent Thread

I met people who have lived here for fifty years and people who moved back here 5 years ago. I talked to young entrepreneurs and retired teachers. In a room that diverse, there were plenty of differing opinions on the "how" and "when" of city policy.

But through every conversation, there was a consistent thread.

There is a prevailing feeling in this city that change isn't just coming — it's already here. And the people of Sioux Falls aren't afraid of it. They don't want to just "manage" our growth. They want to lean into it. They want to lead with heart.

Why Local Matters

It reminded me why I'm running for City Council. State and national politics get the headlines, but local government is where your daily life happens. It's your streets, your parks, your neighborhood's safety, and the kind of thoughtful growth that ensures our kids can afford to live here one day.

When we show up to these rooms, we aren't just voters or candidates. We are neighbors.

Sioux Falls is growing fast. We have a choice: we can let that growth happen to us, or we can shape it together. After seeing the passion in those rooms this week, I've never been more confident that we're ready to lead.

Want to Be in the Room?

If the energy in those conversations inspired you, come channel it into action. On April 19, we're hosting our Rise Together Volunteer Training Day — and we want you there.

No experience needed. Just show up as you are.
